The Club World Cup is set for a major revamp. After the success of its new format, FIFA now wants to stage the tournament every two years from 2029, instead of every four, reports The Guardian.
Europe’s giants are all in. Real Madrid are pushing hard for a shorter cycle, while Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester United – who will miss the 2025 edition – see it as a massive financial opportunity.
The money on offer is eye-watering: Chelsea pocketed nearly €98m after crushing PSG 3-0 in the last edition. FIFA is even considering expanding the field from 32 to 48 teams, to please more clubs and sponsors.
But one huge problem remains: the calendar. Already packed to the brim, adding more games risks overloading both players and fans. A blockbuster plan, but one that will reignite the debate.
