Following France’s 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland, Didier Deschamps expressed satisfaction with his team’s final warm-up match before the 2026 World Cup. The France manager took the opportunity to discuss Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise and Kylian Mbappé, three players expected to play key roles in Les Bleus’ campaign in the United States.
The standout performer of the evening was Michael Olise. The Bayern Munich winger scored a hat-trick and once again showcased the excellent form he has displayed throughout the season. Deschamps did not hide his admiration for a player who has quickly become one of France’s most influential attacking weapons.
Olise Shines as World Cup Approaches
“He is radiant, just like he has been all season with Bayern. Everything comes naturally to him. He is efficient and that’s very good,” Deschamps told TF1. His comments highlighted the confidence he has in Olise, who could emerge as one of France’s biggest threats during the tournament.
While Olise stole the spotlight, Ousmane Dembélé had a quieter evening despite producing several promising attacking moves. Deschamps dismissed any concerns about the French Ballon d’Or winner, who joined the national team late after an exhausting campaign with Paris Saint-Germain. “Ous arrived late, but I can’t take away the need for players to manage themselves with what lies ahead. Ousmane needs to recover physically and mentally after everything he achieved with PSG. Today was more of a training exercise,” he explained. The coach also praised the growing understanding between Dembélé and Olise, noting their ability to switch positions and combine effectively against deep defensive blocks.
Deschamps was equally relaxed when discussing Kylian Mbappé, who has yet to score during France’s World Cup preparations. “I’m not worried. It’s true that he had several chances but lacked efficiency.
He told me he was saving his goals for the United States, and that suits me just fine,” Deschamps joked with a smile. Despite Mbappé’s recent drought, the France coach remains fully confident in the Real Madrid star. With Olise in outstanding form, Dembélé carefully managed after a remarkable season and Mbappé expected to deliver on the biggest stage, Deschamps believes he has all the tools necessary for one final successful World Cup before leaving his position after the tournament.
