At Real Madrid, the growing number of serious knee injuries is starting to raise concerns. After the cases involving Kylian Mbappé and Rodrygo, the club is now examining an unexpected hypothesis: the condition of the pitches at the Santiago Bernabéu and the Valdebebas training center.
Real Madrid is searching everywhere for answers. Why are players suffering so many knee injuries? The latest setback concerns Rodrygo. The Brazilian forward has suffered a tear of the lateral meniscus in his right knee, a serious injury that is expected to keep him out for several months. Recently hampered by a hamstring issue, he had only just returned before this new problem occurred.
Concerns grow over a worrying series of knee injuries
Since August 2023, no fewer than seven Madrid players have suffered ruptured knee ligaments. Among them are Thibaut Courtois, Éder Militão, David Alaba, Dani Carvajal and young Joan Martinez, with some even being affected more than once.
Alongside these severe injuries, other players have regularly experienced knee problems. Kylian Mbappé is also currently sidelined with a sprain that should keep him off the pitch for several weeks.
Faced with this unusual accumulation of injuries, the club has launched an internal investigation. According to Spanish media reports, the quality of the pitches at the Bernabéu and Valdebebas is now being closely examined, a hypothesis that worries both the coaching staff and the players themselves. According to El Mundo, “the club is currently investigating to determine whether this is simply a coincidence.”
Defensa Central adds: “The club wants to thoroughly investigate this coincidence (…) And it’s not only the staff who are concerned, the players themselves are considering the possibility that the quality of the pitches at the Bernabéu and Valdebebas training facilities may not be optimal.”
