A major controversy has erupted in Brittany after a professional Stade Rennais player was convicted by a French court. According to reports from Rennes Info Autrement, the footballer received an 18-month suspended prison sentence with a two-year probation period for “complicity in extortion and violent robbery.”

The case dates back to the night of June 20. Prosecutors stated that the player and two accomplices carried out six targeted robberies against pedestrians in the streets of Rennes. The group allegedly operated in an organized manner, driving around to identify victims before carrying out the attacks.

The methods described during the trial were particularly alarming. Wearing balaclavas, the suspects reportedly followed their targets before demanding their mobile phones. If a victim refused, one of the accomplices allegedly got out of the vehicle and threatened them with a knife. Some of the robberies were also accompanied by physical violence.

Appearing before the court, the young footballer claimed he did not fully understand his friends’ intentions when they picked him up that evening. “After the first robbery, I felt very sorry for the victim. We should have returned the phone and stopped everything at that moment. We all thought that, but we carried on,” he said. The player’s identity has not been made public, although the conviction could now lead Stade Rennais to consider disciplinary action.
