The elimination of the French national team against Spain in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup did not only shatter hopes of another global title. It also deprived the French Football Federation of a significant bonus included in its contract with Nike.
Missing out on the final represents a real setback for the Federation. By reaching the final, Les Bleus would have secured a one-million-euro bonus for the FFF, even in the event of a defeat in the last match.
Nike bonuses tied to France’s World Cup performance
A World Cup triumph would have brought in an additional three million euros for the Federation, underlining the financial stakes tied to sporting success.
This bonus system has been in place for several years between Nike and the FFF. After France’s 2018 World Cup victory in Russia, the brand paid out a two-million-euro bonus, while a final appearance at the time would have generated 500,000 euros.
The amounts have since increased. As in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the current deal includes three million euros for a title and one million for a place in the final. France’s defeat against Spain therefore directly costs the FFF this additional income, although the Federation avoids a much heavier four-million-euro penalty reserved for failure to qualify for the World Cup.
