It’s now official: Théo Hernandez has left AC Milan. At 27, the French left-back has signed a three-year deal with Al-Hilal, one of Saudi Arabia’s top clubs. The transfer is estimated at €25 million. But the end of his six-year spell in Milan didn’t come quietly.
In a goodbye message posted on his social media, Théo thanked his teammates, coaches, and the fans, along with former sporting director Paolo Maldini, who was forced out in 2023. However, the Frenchman didn’t hold back when addressing Milan’s current leadership.
“Leaving wasn’t an easy decision. I’ve always known where I wanted to be, and Milan was my priority. Unfortunately, not everything depends on one person. The direction the club has taken and some recent decisions don’t reflect the values or ambition that brought me here.”
A dig at Zlatan?
Many have interpreted this as a direct swipe at Zlatan Ibrahimovic, now a special advisor to Milan’s owner Gerry Cardinale. Since returning in an executive role, the Swede has influenced sporting decisions — clearly not all of them welcomed by Théo.
Leaving as a true Rossonero
Despite the frustration, Théo leaves with pride. Over six seasons, he played 262 matches, scored 34 goals, and delivered 45 assists, helping Milan to a Serie A title in 2022. A true leader both on and off the pitch.
“I leave with my head held high. I always gave my all for this club. My heart is full, and I hope Milan soon returns to where it belongs.”
A heartfelt farewell… and a message that could spark some serious reflection behind the scenes at Milan.
