Morocco claimed their first-ever U20 World Cup title on Sunday, defeating Argentina 2–0 in Chile. A historic triumph celebrated across the globe — including by Lionel Messi, captain of Argentina’s senior team.
Despite the heartbreak, Messi sent words of encouragement to the young Albiceleste on Instagram: “Keep your heads up, guys.”
He added: “You had an impressive tournament and even though we all wanted to see you lift the Cup, we keep the joy of everything you gave us and the pride of watching you defend our country’s colors with your hearts.”
A Golden Generation for Morocco
Powered by a brace from Yassir Zabiri (12’, 29’), the tournament’s top scorer, Morocco triumphed in front of 43,000 fans, mostly cheering for the Atlas Cubs. Alongside Zabiri, rising talents like Othmane Maamma and Gessime Yassine symbolize this new, fearless generation.
