Real Madrid advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals after eliminating Atlético Madrid in a tense penalty shootout (4-2).

After a 1-0 loss at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, with an early goal from Conor Gallagher, Real Madrid missed a crucial equalizing chance when Vinicius Junior sent a penalty over the crossbar following an incisive run by Kylian Mbappé (70’).

The penalty shootout featured a rare incident: Julian Alvarez’s successful penalty was disallowed due to an involuntary double contact after a slip, confirmed by VAR (Watch the video here).

Courtois and Real Players Alerted the Referee

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois immediately pointed out the irregularity to referee Szymon Marciniak.

“Penalties are a lottery. On Julian’s shot, I felt he touched the ball twice, so I told the referee right away. It’s not easy to see, and it’s really unfortunate for them,” Courtois told Movistar+.

Other Madrid players, including Kylian Mbappé, also alerted the referee’s assistant about the possible double touch. VAR confirmed the violation, leading to the goal being disallowed.

According to Law 14 of the Laws of Football: “The kicker must not play the ball again until it has been touched by another player.”
