One week after the tragic death of Diogo Jota, Liverpool has made a powerful and emotional gesture: the club has decided to retire the No. 20 shirt worn by the Portuguese forward — permanently and across all its teams, from the senior squads to the youth academy and women’s side.

Jota passed away on July 3 in a car accident in Spain, alongside his younger brother André Silva. The shock is still raw at Anfield. In a statement released on Friday, the club said: “It was the number he wore with pride and honour, leading us to countless victories. Diogo Jota will forever be the No. 20 of Liverpool Football Club.”

The Reds confirmed that the decision was made after consulting Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family.

Liverpool will play their first match since Jota’s passing this Sunday, in a preseason friendly against Preston North End. Multiple tributes are planned to honour the memory of the Portuguese striker, who spent five seasons at the club.

Liverpool FC will retire the number 20 jersey across all levels of the club in honour and memory of Diogo Jota.
