Naples jealous of PSG, the Parc des Princes is a gem

Aurelio De Laurentiis did not hold back his words. The president of Naples would like to exchange his outdated Stadio Diego-Maradona for the Parc des Princes, which he considers to be much more profitable and modern. Speaking at the Football Business Forum, he harshly criticized the state of the Neapolitan venue.

Co-organizer of Euro 2032 with Turkey, Italy has aging stadiums, and that is an understatement. Some are in a worrying state. UEFA recently referred to “prehistoric stadiums.” This is a stark contrast to the Parc des Princes, which is well-maintained by PSG, even though they do not own it. And this is what Aurelio De Laurentiis envies.

“The Maradona stadium (in Naples, editor’s note) is a real dump. PSG also plays in a stadium that does not belong to them. But by paying the same amount as Naples to the municipality, they have a stadium that generates 100 million euros per year,” he stated.

Champions League, not enough revenue

He laments an absurd economic model: “We pay to have the stadium the day before and on match day, to clean it the next day, and to return it. In 1990, they vandalized the San Paolo, they stole the money. Now I should renovate while I play… I would lose even more.”

De Laurentiis highlights the gap with better-equipped clubs: “Some can earn 14 million in the Champions League, I at best 3 million in this shabby stadium. And then, I am asked to buy players to remain competitive…” His remarks reignite the debate on the concerning situation of Italian stadiums.
