It is now official: the Blues will indeed go to the 2026 World Cup. But behind the goal of a third star, another burning question is on everyone’s lips: who will succeed Didier Deschamps?
France team: Deschamps is set to leave… and Zidane is getting closer! Yes, but nothing is official yet. The president of the FFF, Philippe Diallo, calls for calm: “This is not a false suspense. It is out of respect for Didier and his staff,” he explains, while reiterating his esteem for Zidane “for what he has brought to French football, and what he has demonstrated as a coach.”
Zidane before the World Cup? Yes… unless there is a huge turnaround
Philippe Diallo assures that ZZ could even be announced at the beginning of the 2026 World Cup: “One option is the end of the first quarter of 2026, around March-April, to be far enough from the final phase. I do not want there to be any disruption,” he added in the columns of L’Équipe.
The Blues will also play two friendly matches at the end of March… which could become the moment chosen to officially announce Zidane’s arrival, possibly alongside Deschamps for a “harmonious” transition.
One thing is certain: the Deschamps era is coming to an end. And Zidane’s shadow is already looming over the Blues’ bench.
