Kylian Mbappé thought he was making a generous, almost trivial gesture. By giving €60,300 — taken from his bonus from the last World Cup — to a police officer responsible for the French national team’s security, the star forward simply wanted to thank a trusted individual. But the donation ultimately triggered a major administrative storm.
According to revelations by the newspaper Le Monde, the officer in question failed to declare the sum. A costly omission: alerted by the officer’s bank, France’s financial intelligence unit Tracfin flagged the transaction, triggering an internal investigation.
A severe sanction despite good intentions
The consequences were harsh. After an investigation opened in 2024, the National Police Directorate (DGPN) decided to place the officer into early retirement. A radical decision, especially since the IGPN had previously chosen, in October, not to impose any disciplinary sanction.
The case highlights the risks linked to personal gifts, even when driven by good intentions. Mbappé himself is not the subject of any legal action, but he now finds himself indirectly tied to a sensitive administrative affair. A gesture of generosity turned into an institutional headache, and a stark reminder that in certain spheres, financial transparency allows no exceptions — even for a gift given from the heart.
