Kylian Mbappé thought he was making a generous, almost trivial gesture. By giving €60,300 — taken from his bonus from the last World Cup — to a police officer responsible for the French national team’s security, the star forward simply wanted to thank a trusted individual. But the donation ultimately triggered a major administrative storm.

According to revelations by the newspaper Le Monde, the officer in question failed to declare the sum. A costly omission: alerted by the officer’s bank, France’s financial intelligence unit Tracfin flagged the transaction, triggering an internal investigation.

A severe sanction despite good intentions

The consequences were harsh. After an investigation opened in 2024, the National Police Directorate (DGPN) decided to place the officer into early retirement. A radical decision, especially since the IGPN had previously chosen, in October, not to impose any disciplinary sanction.
