Xabi Alonso is no longer the head coach of Real Madrid. After just 232 days and 34 matches in charge, the club officially announced on Monday a mutual separation, despite a contract that was supposed to run until 2028.
Arriving with big ambitions, the Spaniard had started his stint in ideal fashion, with 17 wins in 20 matches, top of La Liga and a perfect run in the Champions League in the autumn. But the momentum then completely reversed: only 7 victories in the last 14 games, several heavy defeats and a style of play deemed to show no progress hastened his downfall.
The search for a new coach at Real Madrid
Worn down by the pressure and the climate of distrust around the project, Xabi Alonso and the board agreed to part ways after a meeting in Valdebebas. His final record (24 wins, 4 draws, 6 defeats) looks decent on paper, but far from sufficient by Real Madrid standards. Álvaro Arbeloa takes over immediately.
Behind the scenes, the club is already thinking about what comes next. One name stands out more than any other: Jürgen Klopp. Since leaving Liverpool and taking on a role within the Red Bull galaxy, the German remains firmly on Madrid’s radar, even if Red Bull insist he is untouchable and Florentino Pérez has never given up on this dream.
As a Plan B, another profile is also being monitored: Enzo Maresca, recently dismissed by Chelsea and now available. What was supposed to be the beginning of a new era has turned out to be just a brief interlude, as Real Madrid have already turned the page on the Xabi Alonso chapter.
