It is a little-known detail among the general public, but the future winner of the Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal will not keep the competition’s real trophy.
The Champions League trophy is a dream for countless players and club executives. Yet very few have actually held the true, unique, original version. According to L’Équipe, the famous “big ears” trophy remains the exclusive property of UEFA, and the governing body is extremely selective about its use.
The Original Trophy Returns to UEFA
On the night of the final in Budapest, the victorious club’s players will have the honor of lifting the original trophy in front of millions of television viewers around the world. However, that iconic moment lasts only a few hours.
After the celebrations, the trophy is systematically returned to UEFA’s headquarters in Switzerland. The champions leave with an official replica specifically designed for display in the club’s museum or during events organized by the club.
The use of this replica is also strictly regulated. According to L’Équipe, international travel and commercial activities involving the trophy are subject to precise rules established by UEFA. Therefore, whether PSG or Arsenal lifts the Champions League trophy on Saturday night, neither club will be allowed to keep the original permanently. It remains one of European football’s most prestigious symbols, safeguarded by UEFA even after crowning the king of Europe.
