Memphis Depay approached but too expensive: should OM make a move?

Olympique de Marseille considered making a major splash in the transfer market. According to Foot Mercato, the club’s management recently enquired about Memphis Depay, who is set to become a free agent. OM are looking for both a dressing-room leader and a technical leader. Following Mason Greenwood’s departure, new coach Bruno Genesio wants to find a new star, perhaps one with a less controversial profile, and Marseille quickly turned their attention to Depay.

The idea was certainly appealing. At 32, the Dutch forward has vast experience at the highest level and knows Ligue 1 perfectly after spending several seasons with Olympique Lyonnais. Able to play as a centre-forward, behind a striker or out wide, Depay could bring the technical quality, personality and cutting edge that OM sometimes lack in major matches.

A tempting opportunity with major financial risks

His status as a free agent also makes the deal attractive. Marseille would not have to pay a transfer fee, potentially giving them more room to negotiate a substantial signing bonus and contract. However, the move was quickly ruled out, as the Dutchman’s salary demands are reportedly far too high for OM’s finances. The club merely contacted his representatives before concluding that the deal would be extremely difficult to complete.

From a sporting perspective, the gamble would be tempting. Depay can still make the difference, create chances and take on a leading attacking role, while his Lyon past would add another dimension to a possible move to Marseille. Financially, however, the risk would be much greater. An excessive salary could disrupt the dressing room, limit other signings and become a serious problem if the player failed to rediscover his best form.

OM would therefore be right to pursue the deal only if Memphis Depay significantly lowers his demands. Otherwise, Marseille would be better off targeting a less prestigious player who is more compatible with the club’s wage structure. The move currently appears to be off, but the transfer window can still produce surprises. If the Dutchman fails to secure the contract he is hoping for, OM could be tempted to return in the final weeks of the market.
