Belgium came back from the brink, and Rudi Garcia did not hold back. Qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup after a completely wild win over Senegal (3-2 after extra time), the Red Devils overturned an almost impossible situation.
Trailing 2-0 until the 85th minute, Belgium looked on the verge of elimination. But Romelu Lukaku brought his team back into it, before Youri Tielemans turned the match around with a brace, including a decisive penalty in extra time.
Garcia Criticizes Senegal’s Tactical Choice
After the match, Rudi Garcia delivered a very sharp comment on Senegal’s tactical management. The Belgian coach felt that the Lions of Teranga had made a huge mistake by dropping back to protect their lead.
“At 2-0, we knew they would do everything to protect their goal, which in my opinion is a serious mistake. Remind me, when we are leading 2-0, not to do that!” the French coach told the press. A very clear criticism aimed at Pape Thiaw.
Garcia also explained that Lukaku’s goal had completely changed the momentum of the match. The Belgian coach then let his emotions show on beIN Sports, praising “the 12 million Belgians proud of their team.” Lukaku, who came on at half-time, also highlighted the Red Devils’ character, while saluting Senegal as one of the best teams in the tournament. A qualification snatched through mentality, but also a defeat that could leave deep scars for the Lions.
