FIFA is considering expanding the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams, a major increase from the 32-team format used in 2022. After already approving a 48-team tournament for 2026, this new proposal could further reshape football’s biggest competition.

The idea was put forward by Ignacio Alonso, president of the Uruguayan Football Federation, as a way to celebrate the tournament’s centenary. FIFA President Gianni Infantino called it an “interesting” suggestion and wants to explore it further.

If approved, this expansion would significantly impact the competition’s format, scheduling, and financial stakes. However, the proposal is already sparking debate, especially since the move to 48 teams in 2026 had already drawn criticism.

It remains to be seen whether FIFA will push this project forward—and whether such an expansion would become a permanent feature of future World Cups.
