Ligue 1 Matchday 5 has already caused plenty of damage. PSG won Le Classique against Marseille (2-1) and continued their climb up the table, while OM slipped deeper into the relegation zone. At the top, Monaco remain in control ahead of Lyon and surprise package Paris FC.
After a difficult start to the season, Paris Saint-Germain are gradually moving back towards the leading positions. Winners at the Vélodrome on Sunday night, PSG climbed from 10th to sixth with eight points. However, the gap remains significant, with Monaco already five points ahead.
Monaco Lead as Lyon and Paris FC Impress
AS Monaco remain the team to beat at the start of the season. Their 2-1 victory over Lens took them to 13 points from a possible 15, keeping them unbeaten. Behind them, Lyon made a major statement by thrashing Rennes 4-0. OL sit second with 11 points and boast the best goal difference in the league at +8. Paris FC are also unbeaten after beating Strasbourg 2-1 and share second place with Lyon on 11 points. Lille and Rennes follow on 10 points despite respective defeats to Nice and Lyon.
PSG were the big winners on Sunday night, beating Marseille 2-1 away from home to move within two points of the top four. With eight points from five matches, the two-time European champions are still some way short of their usual pace. For Marseille, however, the situation is becoming increasingly worrying. OM have just three points after five games and four consecutive league defeats, leaving them 17th and in the relegation zone heading into the international break. Only bottom side Le Havre, with two points, have a worse record. Nice finally claimed their first win of the season against Lille, while Auxerre climbed to 10th by beating Brest. Troyes currently occupy the relegation playoff spot.
The full standings after Matchday 5 are: Monaco – 13 pts (+5); Lyon – 11 pts (+8); Paris FC – 11 pts (+5); Lille – 10 pts (+4); Rennes – 10 pts (-1); PSG – 8 pts (+1); Angers – 7 pts (+1); Strasbourg – 7 pts (0); Le Mans – 6 pts (0); Auxerre – 6 pts (-5); Brest – 5 pts (-1); Lorient – 5 pts (-1); Toulouse – 5 pts (-2); Nice – 5 pts (-3); Lens – 4 pts (0); Troyes – 4 pts (-7); Marseille – 3 pts (-1); Le Havre – 2 pts (-3). PSG have therefore limited the damage before the international break and moved back into contention near the top. For OM, the situation is already urgent: after five matches, Marseille are in the relegation zone and 10 points behind leaders Monaco.
