Kylian Mbappé caught attention right down to his footwear this weekend. During the derby between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, the French forward appeared wearing a completely camouflaged pair of boots. The unusual choice can be explained by his spectacular change of equipment supplier.
Two days earlier, Mbappé had officially left Nike to join Swiss brand On, ending a partnership that began when he was still a child. The Frenchman has become both an ambassador and shareholder of the brand and is expected to take part in developing its future football products.
Nike Boots Without the Nike Logo
The problem is that On does not yet have its own boots ready for Mbappé. Against Atlético, the Frenchman therefore continued to wear Nike boots, but with one major difference: the famous Swoosh had been covered up. According to Eurosport, certain details on the sole still made it possible to identify the boots as coming from his former supplier. Mbappé is therefore going through a transition period, with his Nike contract having ended on July 31 while On prepares for its first concrete appearance on the football pitch.
This unusual situation should not last much longer. On co-founder David Allemann said Mbappé would wear the brand’s boots “in the coming weeks,” initially in the form of prototypes specially developed for the France captain. The commercial launch of On’s first football boots is scheduled for 2027, with the Swiss company — previously best known for running and tennis — counting on Mbappé to become the central figure of its move into football. Thierry Henry has also joined the project as director of football.

After nearly 20 years with Nike, Mbappé is preparing to open a new chapter. Until his first genuine On boots are ready, his strange logo-free Nike boots could quickly become a collector’s item from this transitional period.
