Newly appointed Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso is adapting his principles. The 3-4-3 he used at Leverkusen is gone — replaced by a more traditional 4-3-3, which will require full defensive commitment, even from the club’s attacking stars.
According to Marca, Xabi Alonso has abandoned his three-at-the-back formation, deemed incompatible with the current profiles in Real Madrid’s defense. He has opted for a 4-3-3 setup, more in line with the club’s DNA and the structure of its squad. This tactical shift calls for greater collective effort, especially when pressing. Alonso wants defending from all eleven players and plans to meet with Vinicius Junior to demand more defensive discipline and tracking back without the ball.
Mbappé is no exception
Expected to be a key figure in the attack, Kylian Mbappé will also be required to contribute to the team’s defensive work, particularly during transitions.
With this new setup, Alonso aims to build a more balanced Real — a team capable of dominating possession but also suffering together when needed. Collective discipline will be central to his project starting next season.
