Former French international Dimitri Payet has been officially indicted by the Rio de Janeiro State Prosecutor’s Office for psychological violence against his former lover, Larissa Ferrari, a 28-year-old Brazilian lawyer.

This legal development tarnishes the end of the 38-year-old’s career, who was recently released by Vasco da Gama. Ferrari originally filed a complaint on March 29, citing physical, psychological, and sexual abuse that allegedly took place between late 2024 and March 2025 during an extramarital relationship.

Initial dismissal overturned

While the case was initially dropped, it was reopened after Ferrari appealed the decision. Prosecutors have now retained charges of psychological abuse, according to Globo Esporte.

In her statement, Ferrari described emotional manipulation, jealousy-driven outbursts, humiliation, and coercive behavior. She claims she was subjected to degrading treatment under emotional and psychological pressure.

Payet denies allegations

Payet acknowledged the affair during police questioning in April but denied any form of violence. His lawyer, Sheila Lustoza, expressed surprise over the indictment, saying it is based on evidence already reviewed, but remains confident “the courts will recognize Mr. Payet’s innocence.”

Ferrari’s legal team welcomed the decision: “This action shows the authorities understand the seriousness of the case and are committed to ensuring that acts that violate women’s dignity do not go unpunished — regardless of the accused’s public profile.”

What’s next?

The prosecution is seeking damages and reimbursement of medical costs incurred by the alleged victim. The case is ongoing in Brazil and could lead to significant legal consequences for the ex-Marseille and West Ham star.

This case underscores growing scrutiny around high-profile athletes facing legal action for off-field behavior.
