The first major move of the summer transfer window is official: Florian Wirtz has signed with Liverpool.
The Premier League giants confirmed the arrival of the German star from Bayer Leverkusen on Friday evening for a total fee of €136 million (€117M + €19M in bonuses) — a club-record transfer, surpassing the fees paid for Darwin Núñez (€85M) and Virgil van Dijk (€84M).
At just 22 years old, Wirtz has signed a contract until 2030 and will earn €12 million per year, making him the club’s third-highest-paid player behind Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk. Leverkusen’s creative engine, Wirtz enjoyed a stellar spell in Germany: 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 appearances, helping the club to a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in 2024.
No. 10 or winger?
At Liverpool, Wirtz will reunite with Jeremie Frimpong, who also joined from Leverkusen earlier this summer (€40M). He is expected to operate primarily as a central playmaker (No. 10) but can also play on the left wing.
A new era begins at Anfield — and Liverpool’s new gem is ready to shine.
