The football world is in mourning. Diogo Jota, forward for Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. He was only 28 years old. His brother, André Silva—who played for Portuguese second division side Penafiel—also lost his life.

A brilliant career, a brutal farewell

A product of Paços de Ferreira, Jota played for Atlético Madrid, Porto, Wolverhampton, and ultimately Liverpool, where he became a fan favorite and a key figure in the club’s 2025 Premier League title win. With 49 caps and 14 goals for Portugal, he also lifted two UEFA Nations League trophies (2019, 2025). Known for both his talent and kindness, Jota was admired far beyond the pitch.

A historic tribute

In an emotional gesture, Liverpool officially announced the retirement of Diogo Jota’s number 20 jersey. A rare tribute, reflecting his profound impact on the club. The Portuguese Football Federation also expressed its grief in an official statement, describing him as “a contagious joy, a role model for the youth.” A minute of silence will be held ahead of Thursday night’s Portugal–Spain match at the Women’s Euro.

Football has lost a champion. Liverpool has lost a legend. And Portugal, a man loved by all.
