José Mourinho, freshly appointed at Benfica after his dismissal from Fenerbahçe, didn’t hold back on his thoughts. He labeled his time in Turkey as an “error,” suggesting the club was “not at his level” and admitting he made a “bad choice.”

His comments sparked outrage in Istanbul. Journalist Atilla Gökçe from Milliyet criticized Mourinho, demanding he pay compensation to Fenerbahçe and slamming his failure to engage players and fans.

Fenerbahçe’s president, Ali Koç, also responded, acknowledging that Mourinho’s exit was a “difficult decision” but expressing regret over his remarks. He remarked, “A coach of his caliber diminishes himself by speaking this way.”

Mourinho’s Controversial Remarks

Koç emphasized that the team’s elimination from the Champions League couldn’t be blamed solely on player Kerem Aktürkoğlu, hinting at broader issues during Mourinho’s tenure.

The saga between Mourinho and Fenerbahçe concludes bitterly, and given the backlash, it seems unlikely that the Special One will return to Istanbul anytime soon.
