Luca Zidane, the son of football icon Zinédine Zidane, is set to don the Algerian national team jersey.
After representing France at various youth levels, including the U20s and winning an U17 Euro, the 27-year-old goalkeeper has made a significant switch in his sporting nationality.
This marks a historic moment as a Zidane will wear a different shirt than the French Blues. FIFA has approved Luca’s move to Algeria through its Change of Association platform, allowing him to represent his father’s heritage.
Having grown up in Spain and never receiving a call-up from Didier Deschamps or the Spanish national team, Luca is ready to step up for Algeria. The Fennecs have been on the lookout for a reliable goalkeeper, and Luca seems to be the perfect fit for their needs.
First Appearance in October?
With Alexis Guendouz struggling, Anthony Mandrea relegated, and Alexandre Oukidja injured, coach Vladimir Petković now has a credible option in Luca.
He could even be called up for the upcoming international break on October 6, just in time for crucial World Cup qualifying matches.
The Africa Cup of Nations is also on the horizon. Will we see a Zidane in an official match wearing the green jersey? That possibility could become a reality this winter.
