Lucas Chevalier would have preferred to avoid this controversy. The PSG player has been accused of sharing far-right ideas after “liking” an Instagram post. The player will explain himself from Sunday night to Monday.
Lucas Chevalier finds himself in turmoil, quite against his will. The PSG goalkeeper insists that this interaction was “accidental” and regrets the uproar caused on social media.
Just hours after the hard-fought victory against Lyon (3-2), the Parisian goalkeeper found his name at the center of a controversy: internet users noticed that he had liked a post where the vice-president of the Republicans, Julien Aubert, announced that he would support the National Rally against the New Popular Front. This triggered a torrent of criticism.
In a lengthy Instagram story, Chevalier explained that he had “liked while scrolling, without realizing it,” and that this post did not correspond “at all” to his beliefs.
“I saw what was said about me the previous evening regarding the fact that I liked a post on Instagram with a political orientation that I obviously do not share,” Lucas Chevalier wrote in an Instagram story resembling a statement. “I am not trying to convince you, but it is disheartening to know that by scrolling and leaving a like without realizing it on a post, and that upon waking from your nap to prepare for the match, you are informed that your image is tarnished from top to bottom for an accidental action, it bothers me.”
“The limits have been exceeded”
He claims to have been deeply affected by the accusations against him, believing that “the limits have been exceeded.” He reminds that the values instilled by his family are the opposite of what he is being accused of.
“I am not here to lay out my education and my political beliefs because I am primarily a footballer. But it is certain that anyone who knows me knows very well how much I am a person whose parents and family have instilled values, respect, and that I would never allow myself to think those things.”
“But the damage is done, and things have been said about me. You tried to make me look like a fascist, and it is not me you are targeting, but my entire family. I would never put myself in the victim’s position, but the limits have been exceeded, by a long shot.”
The controversy has escalated to the point that it has prompted reactions from some political figures, including Éric Ciotti, who denounced “racist insults” directed at the player. This issue has ignited social media well beyond the sporting context.
