Kylian Mbappé admits that he played a bit like a rat during the France/Ukraine match on Thursday night at the Parc des Princes. France had just delivered a rather dull first half against Ukraine (4-0) when the match nearly turned after the break.
After a VAR review, the referee considered awarding a penalty to the Ukrainians… before ultimately maintaining his initial decision. But even if the penalty had been given, Mike Maignan would have had a little help. And that help came from… Kylian Mbappé.
The French captain discreetly stepped on the penalty spot, making the opposing shot a bit less comfortable.
“If there had been a penalty and the player slipped a bit”
“In fact, there was no one near the penalty spot (laughs),” the Real Madrid forward told TF1 cameras. “I take a lot of penalties, so I know the support areas. If there had been a penalty and the player slipped a bit… we take it (smiles). In the end, there was no penalty. It’s a rat gesture, yes! A real rat gesture! When the referee tells me there could be a penalty, I just want to put my goalkeeper in the best conditions.”
Then, the captain of the Blues did not hesitate. He opened the scoring… with a penalty, using a shot that was half lob, half Panenka.
