After the 4-0 victory against Ukraine, Kylian Mbappé left the national team to join Real Madrid due to inflammation in his right ankle.
Officially, he is supposed to undergo examinations at the club, but the Spanish press indicates that no check-up is planned. This new absence reignites suspicions of a “diplomatic injury,” especially since the next match in Azerbaijan is inconsequential, with France already qualified for the 2026 World Cup.
Jérôme Rothen, on the other hand, denounces preferential treatment and believes that Mbappé is “inventing” an injury to avoid a difficult trip. According to him, this could create tensions in the locker room, as his teammates still have to make the journey despite their fatigue.
“Kylian still has inflammation in his ankle”
Didier Deschamps has defused the controversy by explaining that Mbappé is indeed suffering from inflammation and that there is no interest in taking risks. The coach recalls having acted similarly with other players, such as Camavinga.
“Kylian still has inflammation in his ankle. I have made him available to Real Madrid and their medical staff. It is up to the staff to decide what they need to do because I believe there is no risk to take since we are qualified. This was also the case before Kylian with Camavinga, who could have been available for the match on Sunday. There is no risk to take with anyone. The 22 players who are here are concerned about the match against Azerbaijan,” Didier Deschamps specified.
