Is PSG in danger of losing the title? The question now clearly arises. By letting the autumn champion spot slip away despite a hard-fought victory against Metz (3–2), Paris handed the top of Ligue 1 to Lens. A signal that is far from trivial.
With a one-point lead at the winter break, RC Lens stand out as a genuine contender. Historically, the midseason leader goes on to win the title in 60% of cases (15 titles over the last 25 seasons). In other words, statistically, PSG now have roughly a 40% chance of seeing the title slip away.
Lens Take the Upper Hand at Midseason
All the more so because Paris are not offering every guarantee. A lack of consistency, tricky matches, a reduced margin for error… Meanwhile, Lens keep moving forward steadily, driven by Bollaert and a strong momentum. Marseille, back to within four points of PSG, are also lying in wait.
Of course, PSG have overturned this kind of situation in the past. But in a Ligue 1 more open than ever, Paris are no longer in a position of absolute strength. And even if Lens are not the official favorites, the numbers and the momentum currently give them a very real advantage.
