After concerns raised by Olympique de Marseille about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s physical condition, Gabon head coach Thierry Mouyouma responded firmly. He insisted that the player had been deemed fit by the medical staff and reminded everyone that during international windows, players fall under the authority of their national teams.
The controversy grew after Aubameyang featured against Cameroon in a 1–0 defeat despite thigh discomfort. His appearance alarmed OM, prompting a strong reaction from the Gabonese coach, who stood by his decision.

Criticized for fielding his captain under such circumstances, Mouyouma used a press conference to set the record straight. He strongly defended his medical team’s judgment and denounced what he saw as a lack of respect toward the national side. “This contempt must stop. We are playing in an Africa Cup of Nations, not a recovery camp. The player was tested, examined, and cleared by our medical staff and by the CAF medical commission,” he stated.
Mouyouma also reiterated the rules governing international windows: “During FIFA dates, players belong to their countries. I simply ask for respect for our work, our decisions, and our ambitions.” A forceful statement that highlights the recurring tensions between European clubs and African national teams over player management.
