Paris FC Safe for Now, Kombouaré Turns Up the Pressure

Arriving this winter as a firefighter, Antoine Kombouaré delivered for Paris FC. The survival mission is almost complete, the team has been stabilized, and the dressing room restored: the 62-year-old coach has once again proven his ability to put out fires, even if he does not particularly enjoy the role. Now sitting 13th in Ligue 1, the Parisian club has pulled clear of the relegation zone and approaches the end of the season with calm.

But another question is already taking center stage: will Kombouaré still be on the bench next season? Under contract for 18 months, with an optional extra year, he could paradoxically become a victim of his own success. Paris FC is preparing for a new, ambitious cycle, and the club’s management has never hidden its desire for a younger, more “marketable” coach capable of embodying the project over the long term.

A Coach Under Pressure Despite Results

This is a scenario Kombouaré does not intend to accept quietly. Speaking on After Foot, the former Nantes manager responded to criticism regarding his legitimacy, reminding everyone that his primary role is to win matches—and that results speak for themselves. Clear, direct, and true to himself.

“The image of being a firefighter? I’ve stopped fighting with people who talk, debate, and think for me. I do my job. With the shareholder and decision-makers, including Marco Neppe (sporting director), I tell them: give me a team with good players. Because if I’m still here, the idea is to raise our level and aim for at least a European spot. Words don’t matter, actions do—I want to know what the squad will be.”

Whether that will be enough in the face of the club’s growing ambitions remains to be seen. Behind the scenes, Paris FC is already planning for the future, with the intention of installing a strong figurehead to support its rise. Survival is secured—now comes the real challenge: the future of the bench. Between an experienced coach delivering results and a management focused on image and long-term vision, Paris FC will have to decide—and quickly.
