France has reclaimed the top spot in the FIFA rankings from Spain, something that had not happened in eight years. The timing could not be better, with the World Cup fast approaching for Les Bleus.
The France national team had a great opportunity to end the international break at the summit of the FIFA rankings. After victories against Brazil (2-1) and Colombia (3-1) in friendly matches, Les Bleus were just 1.8 points behind Spain, who were leading at the time.
Spain’s slip opens the door for France’s return to the top
A misstep by La Roja against Egypt had the potential to change everything—and that is exactly what happened. Despite dominating the match, Spain was held to a 0-0 draw, creating numerous chances but failing to break through Egypt’s defense, with goalkeeper Shobeir delivering an outstanding performance.
Even reduced to ten men after Fathy’s late red card, Egypt held firm. As a direct result, France climbed back to the number one spot in the world for the first time since September 2018, just after their second World Cup triumph in Russia. Could this be a sign of destiny just weeks before the next World Cup?
