Montpellier HSC could soon enter a new phase—both in scale and governance. In an interview with Midi Libre, Laurent Nicollin confirmed his intention to open up the club’s capital, admitting to growing fatigue after a difficult sporting and economic period.

The end of an era in Montpellier? Having led the club for several years, following in the footsteps of his father Louis Nicollin, Laurent Nicollin acknowledged that discussions are already underway with several potential investors. Five options are currently being explored, with hopes of receiving concrete offers by mid-May. The stated goal is clear: secure the club’s financial stability and help it return to Ligue 1.

A turning point driven by fatigue and financial pressure

Deeply affected by the club’s relegation to Ligue 2, Nicollin admitted he is going through a difficult personal period. Between a loss of motivation and increasing weariness, he confessed that he no longer finds enjoyment in his role. “I’m not at 200%,” he said, also pointing to a challenging environment marked by financial struggles, declining TV rights revenues, and stalled infrastructure projects.

“I’m ready to fight, but with proper weapons. Fighting with a pocket knife—I’m past that age. It’s the age, the relegation which hurts a lot, the passing of certain people, the behavior of others, the club’s 50th anniversary… There are many things,” he explained candidly.

“If I have to let go, I will let go.” Facing this situation, the Montpellier president is ruling nothing out, including multi-club ownership. It is an open stance, as long as the essentials are preserved: the club’s sustainability and job security. During a recent trip to Strasbourg, he was struck by the infrastructure and organization of the local club, now backed by the BlueCo consortium. The visit highlighted the growing gap between Montpellier and better-structured, better-funded clubs, reinforcing the sense that a major transition could soon reshape the club’s future.
