Paris Saint-Germain’s victory this Wednesday has further worsened the situation for FC Nantes, now stuck near the bottom of the table and more threatened than ever by relegation. The historic French football club is going through a very difficult period, with its future in Ligue 1 looking increasingly uncertain.
Are FC Nantes heading to Ligue 2? After several seasons flirting with relegation, the drop seems closer than ever. Sitting 17th and five points behind Auxerre, the first team outside the relegation zone, the pressure is mounting. Speaking at a press conference, Luis Enrique showed little emotion about the situation, describing it as a common reality in modern football.
Historic Clubs Struggling in Modern Football
“It’s typical. In every league, there are always teams with great history that are struggling. That’s how top-level football works. But it’s true that when you go to Nantes, playing away in that stadium with that atmosphere, it’s something special,” he said.
The Parisian coach also broadened his remarks to include other historic clubs facing difficulties, such as AS Saint-Étienne and Girondins de Bordeaux, expressing regret at not seeing them at the top level. “There are also teams in Ligue 2 I would like to see in Ligue 1, like Saint-Étienne, which is also a historic club. I’ve never played against Saint-Étienne. Or Bordeaux as well. Many teams are trying to return to Ligue 1, and it’s unfortunate for those that can’t. But that’s football—you have to accept it.”
