France National Team: Lloris as 3rd Goalkeeper at the World Cup, Is It Approved?

Lucas Chevalier’s thigh injury comes at the worst possible time and has reignited discussions as the World Cup approaches. Didier Deschamps must once again address the question of the third goalkeeper, a unique role within the hierarchy of the French national team.

Behind the undisputed Mike Maignan and Brice Samba, the coach is not necessarily looking for the third-best goalkeeper, but rather a player capable of embracing a supporting role while bringing experience to the squad. In this context, certain options are resurfacing, including Hugo Lloris, whose profile is quite unique for this kind of mission.

Retired from international duty since January 2023, Hugo Lloris (39 years old, 145 caps) remains open to a return to the national team. The current Los Angeles FC goalkeeper would accept a number three role if Didier Deschamps were to call him up.

However, those close to him insist that he will not make any move himself: out of respect for the current goalkeepers, he refuses any form of pressure or self-promotion. But if selected, the door would clearly not be closed. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Lucas Chevalier, a return for the former captain is not being considered for now.
