As Haiti prepares for its first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Scotland, the national team has been forced to alter the design of its jersey. FIFA requested the removal of an illustration depicting independence fighters raising the Haitian flag.
The 2026 World Cup is already beginning amid several controversies, and this is the latest one. FIFA has ordered Haiti to modify its official kit before entering the competition.
FIFA Objects to Historical Symbol on Haiti Kit
According to world football’s governing body, the image could be interpreted as a political message, which would violate its regulations regarding official equipment used during international tournaments.
The decision sparked confusion within the Haitian Football Federation, which argued that the symbol had been misunderstood. The illustration referenced the Battle of Vertières, a major historical event that led to Haiti’s independence in the early 19th century.
Haiti has been forced to change the design of its World Cup jersey after it was deemed too political by FIFA.
The jersey originally included a depiction of the final battle of the Haitian War of Independence in 1803.

Despite the protests, kit manufacturer Saeta agreed to modify the jersey in order to comply with FIFA’s requirements. The company stressed that the original design was intended to celebrate “the pride, resilience, and spirit of the Haitian people,” with no political intent. Haiti will therefore begin its World Cup campaign wearing a revised version of its official jersey.
