The expected arrival of Zinedine Zidane as head coach of the France national team could trigger a major shake-up within Les Bleus. At least, that is the opinion of Marcel Desailly, who believes the future manager will be eager to break away from the habits established during Didier Deschamps’ tenure.
Speaking to Flashscore, the former World Cup winner suggested that Zidane would quickly seek to impose his own footballing identity once he takes charge of the national side. Desailly believes the French legend will not simply continue with the existing framework left behind by his predecessor.
Zidane Expected to Reshape France Squad
“I think Zidane did an excellent job with Real Madrid. But he never really had the chance to fully express his philosophy,” Desailly explained. “He inherited a system that had already been put in place and worked with players who were already there. Fortunately, he added his own vision of the game, and it was hugely successful.”
According to Desailly, Zidane will enjoy greater freedom with the national team and could make several bold decisions. “I am convinced that four or five players who were undisputed starters under Didier will leave the team to make way for a different philosophy,” he said. Potential changes could affect experienced figures such as Adrien Rabiot, N’Golo Kanté, Theo Hernandez, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Mike Maignan or Dayot Upamecano, although no names have been officially mentioned.
If Desailly’s prediction proves accurate, several of France’s current leaders could see their status challenged once Zinedine Zidane officially takes over the national team.
