It had been rumored for several days, and it is now official: Real Madrid announced on Thursday the return of José Mourinho as head coach of the first team. The Portuguese manager has signed a three-year contract and will officially take charge on July 13 when pre-season training begins.
José Mourinho is back. Thirteen years after leaving the Santiago Bernabéu, the “Special One” returns to the Madrid bench with the ambition of bringing the club back to the summit of European football. It is a comeback that is both symbolic and eagerly anticipated by a section of the Real Madrid fanbase.
Mourinho Returns to Lead a New Era
To persuade Benfica to release their coach, Real Madrid had to pay a significant fee. According to the information provided, the Spanish club paid €15 million to buy out the remaining years of the Portuguese manager’s contract.
“Meeting on Thursday, June 11, under the presidency of Florentino Pérez, the Board of Directors of Real Madrid decided to appoint José Mourinho as head coach of the first team for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029. The Portuguese manager will officially join the club on July 13, the date set for the start of pre-season preparations ahead of the 2026-27 campaign,” the club said in an official statement.
A new chapter is therefore beginning in Madrid with the return of one of the most influential managers in the club’s recent history. José Mourinho is officially back at Real Madrid.
