Just days before France begin their 2026 World Cup campaign, Rayan Cherki delivered a heartfelt message in a video released by the French Football Federation.

The new Manchester City player spoke with unusual honesty about his journey, the criticism he has faced, and his desire to share a positive message. Open and unfiltered, Cherki reflected on the public image that has followed him since the start of his career.

Cherki Calls for Unity and Understanding

“To be honest with you, today I don’t know why some people don’t like me. Maybe because I have a big beard, maybe because my skin is too dark,” he said. Constantly in the spotlight since the age of 15, Cherki explained that he has learned to live with judgment, rumors, and the stories often created around him.

“Since I was 15, I’ve been under the spotlight. Since I was 15, people have invented a lot of things and a lot of stories,” he added. The 22-year-old insists those criticisms no longer affect him and that he is now fully focused on his career and ambitions.

Beyond football, Cherki hopes to use his platform to inspire younger generations. He believes diversity is a strength, pointing to the current French national team as an example. “Every human being is different. Every human being has their own journey. That’s what should unite us all. When I look at the French team, it’s beautiful, with diversity and many different stories. That’s what makes France strong today.” He also hopes this World Cup can bring people together regardless of background, skin color, or origin, revealing a more personal side behind the gifted playmaker and fierce competitor.
