World Cup: Mbappé Joins Klose and Closes In on Messi!

Kylian Mbappé continues to make World Cup history. After scoring a brace in France’s 3-0 victory over Iraq, the French captain increased his tally to 16 goals in World Cup finals tournaments.

Mbappé’s 2026 World Cup campaign is now fully underway. Once again decisive against Iraq, the French star keeps breaking records. At just 27 years old, he has moved ahead of legends Gerd Müller (14 goals) and Ronaldo (15), while drawing level with Miroslav Klose in second place on the list of the competition’s all-time top scorers.

Only one player now stands ahead of him: Lionel Messi. The Argentine icon, who also scored twice against Austria earlier in the day, has reached 18 World Cup goals.

Asked about this long-distance battle, Mbappé refused to compare himself to Messi. “Leo has always scored, he scores, and he will always score,” he said, insisting that his focus remains on France’s journey rather than individual records.

“I’m not thinking about the top scorer title. I’ve always scored goals at the World Cup, so it’s not something I need to worry about. A rivalry with Messi for the all-time World Cup scoring record? No, there is no rivalry. I don’t watch what he does, otherwise I’d have to do even more. I only focus on my team. When you score goals, you naturally get closer to that level, but for me, our progress is what matters most,” the French forward told reporters, according to L’Équipe.
