Just days before their final group match against Norway, France are facing an unusual situation. Didier Deschamps has left the United States following the death of his mother on Tuesday.
The France coach has been hit by a personal tragedy and will return to France to attend his mother’s funeral. His absence means he will miss Friday’s clash with Norway on matchday three of Group I at the 2026 World Cup.
Guy Stephan to Lead France Against Norway
To ensure continuity within the squad, Guy Stephan will take charge of the team. Deschamps’ long-time assistant will oversee training sessions and sit on the bench for the match.
The French Football Federation confirmed the arrangement in a statement. In agreement with president Philippe Diallo, who is with the French delegation, Deschamps has entrusted the squad to his assistant until his return.
In this painful context, French football is expected to rally around the France coach and offer its support after this loss during the World Cup.
