RC Lens must appoint a new captain following Adrien Thomasson’s departure for Stade Rennais. While Florian Sotoca naturally remains one of the dressing room’s senior figures, Florian Thauvin has also emerged as a serious candidate to inherit the armband.
New Lens head coach Dino Toppmöller is particularly fond of the former Olympique de Marseille player’s profile. The German manager confirmed that he is considering giving Thauvin the responsibility, although he does not want to announce his decision before discussing it directly with the squad.
Thauvin Emerges as a Key Leader for Toppmöller
“I am considering him for the captaincy, along with a few other players,” Toppmöller admitted in an interview with L’Équipe. The coach particularly highlighted the France international’s experience, football intelligence, technical ability and personality.
Even without the armband, Thauvin is already regarded as one of the leaders in the Lens dressing room. At 33, he has considerable experience at the highest level and is never afraid to take responsibility both on and off the pitch.
Pre-season should allow the coaching staff to test several options before making a final decision. Thauvin is already familiar with the role, having worn the captain’s armband during his spell at Udinese. His profile therefore appears to match Toppmöller’s expectations perfectly, but it remains to be seen whether the new RC Lens coach will officially name him as Adrien Thomasson’s successor.
