According to Foot Mercato, the decision made by Habib Beye on Sunday evening did not go unnoticed at Olympique de Marseille. The Marseille coach chose to leave Mason Greenwood on the bench at kickoff against OGC Nice, a strong call for such a decisive player this season.

Greenwood on the bench, and Marseille sink even deeper into crisis. Officially, Beye justified the decision with physical reasons. Speaking to Ligue 1+, he explained that his striker had been struggling for several days: “Mason is very limited by the injury from Lille. He’s played two matches with significant pain, we can’t put him at risk.” A cautious approach, aimed at protecting both the player and the team.

These frictions reportedly led the staff to place the former Manchester United player on the bench for this match. Coming on in the 63rd minute during the 1-1 draw, the Englishman was therefore not only physically affected.

It is a delicate situation for Marseille, especially as several attacking absences (Amine Gouiri, Igor Paixão, and Hamed Junior Traoré)  had already limited the team’s options. This context gives even greater weight to the decision, which could spark further discussion in the coming days.
