Olympique de Marseille have found their new sporting director. According to reports from L’Équipe, Grégory Lorenzi is set to replace Medhi Benatia, with his arrival on the Canebière now considered imminent.

OM are preparing for major changes behind the scenes before reshaping the squad on the pitch. Just three days after officially leaving Stade Brestois, former central defender Grégory Lorenzi has already secured a massive new challenge. The twist is significant, as Lorenzi had recently appeared destined for OGC Nice. But Marseille managed to hijack the deal at the very last moment.

Lorenzi Given Full Sporting Control at OM

The future Marseille executive was reportedly convinced directly by Stéphane Richard, who will officially become the club’s new president on July 2. Marseille are said to have offered him a far more ambitious project, along with a contract well above the proposal made by Nice.

The sporting situation at Nice also played a major role in his decision. Currently stuck in the relegation play-off spot and threatened with a drop to Ligue 2, the club is going through a highly unstable period. That uncertainty reportedly pushed Lorenzi toward OM, where he will now have full control over sporting decisions. One of his first major tasks will be choosing the next head coach, as Habib Beye is not expected to remain in charge. Marseille are reportedly prioritizing a French manager.

Another important detail: Lorenzi’s brother, who already worked alongside him at Brest, will also join OM as a recruiter. A new era is beginning in Marseille.
