Olympique de Marseille is going through a major crisis following its elimination in the Champions League in Bruges and the heavy defeat against PSG. The club now sits 4th in Ligue 1, far from the top of the table, and the current momentum is very negative.
Roberto De Zerbi left his position as head coach by mutual agreement, weakened by poor results and part of the locker room no longer backing his decisions. Visibly emotional in public, the Italian did not survive the bad run of form.
Club leadership shaken after coaching exit
The situation escalated further with the announcement from Medhi Benatia, who offered his resignation during an internal meeting. Promoted to director of football in 2025 and close to the club’s leadership, he wanted to step down in solidarity with De Zerbi. In L’Équipe, the sporting director appeared deeply affected. “When a coach leaves, it feels like a family member is gone. It always hurts. He is far from being the only one at fault. We will need to find better solutions,” he said.

Owner Frank McCourt, however, refused his resignation. Benatia therefore remains in his role for now, even though he appears strongly impacted by the club’s sporting and internal situation.
