Achraf Hakimi has been caught up in controversy again after the high-tension AFCON final. The PSG full-back has been handed a two-match suspension by CAF, one of them suspended, for “unsporting behavior” following the towel incident during the Senegal–Morocco match.
In Paris, the situation is being watched from a distance, but the Moroccan defender is clearly in the eye of the storm. And he is far from the only one to have been hit by the wave of sanctions decided by CAF after this explosive final won by Senegal (1–0 after extra time).
A Wave of Sanctions After a Fiery Final
Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has paid a heavy price: five matches suspended and a 100,000-dollar fine for having urged his players to leave the pitch. Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaïla Sarr were also handed two-match bans each.
The federations were not spared either: more than 600,000 dollars in fines for Senegal and 315,000 dollars for Morocco. For his part, Ismaël Saibari received a three-match ban for intimidating goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf.
Finally, CAF rejected the Moroccan appeal. The outcome: a chaotic final and a particularly hefty disciplinary bill for everyone involved.
