Real Madrid are in crisis, and Kylian Mbappé did not mince his words. After the crushing defeat at Benfica (4-2) that sends the Merengues into the Champions League playoffs, the French star delivered a blunt message, directly targeting his team’s attitude.
Mbappé let loose and was not kind to his teammates. After this latest setback for Real Madrid, the captain of the French national team judged the players on the pitch harshly.
A Deepening Crisis at the Bernabéu
“It’s not a problem of quality or tactics. It’s a matter of desire. We didn’t see a team playing for its life. We don’t have continuity in our game; we need to fix this problem. It can’t be good one day and bad the next. A champion team doesn’t do that,” he said, denouncing a side without consistency and unworthy of a title contender.
Despite Mbappé’s brace, the Arbeloa-era Real still fail to convince. The malaise is deep, and the Frenchman, already a leader on the pitch, is also asserting himself as the boss in the dressing room.
In this collective turmoil, Mbappé continues to write his own story. With 13 goals in the Champions League this season, he is just two short of Karim Benzema’s record (15 in 2021-2022). A performance that should be put into perspective given the new format, but which confirms one thing: while Real wobble, Mbappé keeps moving forward. The question remains whether his goals will be enough to save a season that is shaping up to be explosive in Madrid.
