OM endured a nightmarish evening in Belgium. While a draw would have been enough to reach the playoffs, Marseille completely collapsed against Club Brugge, losing 3-0 without ever really being in the game. It was a brutal elimination that Medhi Benatia simply cannot understand.
The club’s director of football, Medhi Benatia, was furious after OM’s Champions League exit, especially given that qualification was there for the taking. “A terrible night. I’d even say a shameful one. When you’re at a club like this, you can lose matches like we did in Madrid or Lisbon,” he said.
A Humiliating Elimination in Belgium
“But you can’t lose like this tonight. It’s a recurring problem because, in truth, we’ve sometimes explained it in the league by a lack of motivation against teams that seem weaker. We’ve seen that when we’re not at 100%, we often get knocked out,” he added.
“Football, even if you have great players, has to be respected. And tonight, the truth as director of football is that the only thing to do is to apologize to the supporters, to the people who make sacrifices for this club. I hope the players realize that this is professional misconduct.”
“I’ve lost many matches in my career, but rarely have I felt this level of shame, being capable of conceding six goals over two games. For the scenario, we were following the results on our phones, but when you lose the way you did today, what did you expect? We didn’t even deserve it. It’s sad.”
