A “Dirty” Game: Mbappé Slams Paraguay’s Aggression and Cheating

France are through to the World Cup quarter-finals, but this qualification against Paraguay will leave a very particular taste. Not just the taste of victory, but that of a violent, fragmented, and tense match, often on the edge, where Les Bleus had to survive a battle rather than play a true high-level football game.

Fouls, provocations, repeated clashes, and controversial refereeing: this Paraguay–France encounter quickly descended into an unbearable atmosphere. The French expected a fight—they got one. And at the end of a highly charged evening, they responded in the best possible way: without falling into the trap, without losing control, and by securing a 1-0 win.

Paraguay’s Physical Approach Sparks Controversy

On the Paraguayan side, Orlando Gill did little to calm the debate. The goalkeeper openly embraced his team’s style of play, heavily focused on duels, impact, and intimidation. “Paraguay is like that, a tough team, very physical. France isn’t used to it,” he said after the match.

A statement that is bound to spark reactions. On the pitch, Les Bleus often felt targeted and provoked. William Saliba admitted it openly. The French defender knew exactly what to expect. “The coach warned us they would provoke us, go hard into challenges, and try to hit us to take us out of the game,” the Arsenal player explained on M6.

For him, the key was not to crack. In such a tense match, France could have lost control, retaliated, picked up a red card, and ruined everything. But they held firm. “They did it, but we stayed focused. We didn’t get a red card. We kept all our players, we won—that’s positive,” Saliba added.

Kylian Mbappé perfectly summed up the French mindset. The decisive goalscorer explained that France had accepted playing a different kind of game. Not a stylish one. Not a glamorous one. A dirty, hard battle where they had to respond physically and mentally.

“We know how to play dirty football too,” Mbappé said after the match. “If we have to get our hands dirty, we will. They thought we’d come in playing elegant football, just nice moves and one-twos. We can play dirty as well. We did it today—and even in that, we were better than them.”

Rayan Cherki echoed a similar sentiment. Coming off the bench late in the game, the attacking midfielder stressed that France wanted to prove they could handle tough situations. “When you play South American teams, they’re not here to be friendly on the pitch,” he told beIN Sports.

The former Lyon player also took a subtle jab at the refereeing. The statistic raised eyebrows on the French side: three yellow cards in the match, all for France. “I didn’t know they could commit around thirty fouls without being punished once. But it doesn’t matter—we won,” he said with a smile.

Even Zlatan Ibrahimović was struck by the composure of Les Bleus. The former Swedish striker praised France’s ability not to respond to provocations. “If I had played tonight, I would have received four or five red cards,” he joked on FOX Sports. He added: “France stayed relaxed, they even smiled at them. That was the best response.”

This match will not be remembered as a technical showcase, but it could prove significant in France’s World Cup journey. Because Les Bleus showed they can also win in the mud. Against an aggressive opponent, in a heated atmosphere, with questionable refereeing, they kept their cool and secured their place in the quarter-finals.

Paraguay tried to drag them out of the game. France responded with maturity, composure, and victory. A messy match in its execution—but perhaps a defining one for Les Bleus.
